Divine Medjool Date and Dark Chocolate Candy – 20 calories each

I’ve written about Medjool Dates here on the EZ Diet Blog and incorporated them into my pie crust. They have a delicious caramel texture and taste. And although they have a high sugar content the Glycemic Load (GL) is only 9.

Medjool Dates, God’s candy that grows on trees I’ve always thought. I’m amazed at how similar this little fruit is to a piece of Whitman’s caramel chocolate candy. Minus the chocolate, of course. Then it occurs to me, why not just add a chunk of dark chocolate? After a friend tasted what I had dubbed God’s Candy (Medjool Date w/Dark Chocolate), the word “divine” was used. So I’m going with Divine.

A whole Medjool Date is 20 calories, pictured above are halves, at 10 calories. You have to cut them in half to take the pit out. I’ve estimated 6 to 10 calories in dark chocolate for a 20 calorie delicious dessert snack. All four pieces pictured above are only 64 to 80 calories total. And delicious. I’ve considered adding a sprinkle of walnut topping in the sticky inside of each date, (before the chocolate is added), for a healthy Snickers Bar alternative. 🙂

MedjoolPictured to the right is how I buy them at my local grocer. I like picking them myself. I get about 20 a week. At $6.98 a pound that’s about $5.  At least 6 will be used in 2 pie crusts with a half cup of almond meal ground together with pumpkin pie spice. I’ve seen large tubs at Costco. If you see a large tub of Medjool Dates for a deal, buy them, they last for months sitting out on the counter.

Medjool dates are a type of tree fruit that originate in the Middle East and North Africa, but they can be cultivated with some success in a number of desert-like regions around the world. Dates in general make up an important part of Middle Eastern cuisine, but medjools particularly are prized for their large size, their sweet taste, and their juicy flesh even when dried. They are often enjoyed on their own as a snack or as a flavoring element within a larger meal or baked confection.

Difference from Other Sorts of Dates

There are many different varieties of dates, though all share some basic characteristics. They grow on date palm trees, for instance, and are native to hot, arid climates. Their fruit can be eaten fresh but is more commonly dried, which lengthens its lifespan and prevents early spoilage. Medjool dates are widely regarded as the “best” variety of dates. They are certainly the largest and are usually also the most expensive to buy. Many consumers believe that they have the richest flavor as well.

Healthy Medjool Date Pecan Piemedjool date pecan pie

Here’s another healthy dessert/snack idea. Pecan pie substitute, replace the Medjool Date pit with a pecan, you’re done.

I love pecan pie, however every time I look into a healthier, lower calorie option for corn syrup (main ingredient) I was stumped. However, Medjool Dates may be the way to make a healthier Pecan Pie with Stevia instead of sugar.
