diaryEZ Diet Note:  I agree with the importance of keeping a food diary.  I don’t however agree that that’s the #1 tip for losing weight.  Avoiding processed food would be #1 in my mind.

One benefit of keeping a food diary is most people will overdo their diet in the beginning and drastically reduce calories below what’s allowed. If you’re tracking it, my experience is you can actually eat more. Also, you start to see where cutting back a bit on protein adds a whole lot of extra calories for fists full of vegetables. And finally, eventually after using a diary for a few months you’ll be able to calculate meal calories in your head. You can look at a plate of food at a restaurant and quickly estimate the calories.  One problem with an app doing all your calculations is you never memorize the calorie counts in different food groups so you’ll never be able to do it without the app. Atrophy.

This 8.5 X 11 diary template is designed to be printed and folded into a small booklet that fits easily into your pocket. I used 3 hole punched paper and kept mine in a notebook on my desk. Or, I would clip 20 or 30 pages together and keep it with me. This template has a blank side for grocery lists, meal notes, and other information you want to document. I kept all mine. It’s interesting to look back through them after several years to remember exactly how I lost one pound at a time, 100 times over 5 months.

Here’s why you must track your food intake if you are serious about losing weight:

To gain a pound of fat every single week, all you need to do is overeat by 500 calories per day. How easy is that? A bowl of ice cream, some extra guacamole, a few tortilla chips, a dollop of peanut butter. A few seemingly insignificant slips during the week and ‘presto” you’ve gain a pound.

Food is deceptively energetic. Dietary slip ups provide a ton of caloric energy. If you’re not burning it off, it goes straight to your hips.

This is why tracking apps are so important. If you take the additional seconds required to record your food intake, you will always know where you stand. You’ll know how much more you can eat before you tip your energy balance in favor of putting on fat.

If you stay in this side of the energy balance equation, your body will turn to it’s fat reserves to get the energy it needs to keep you going. Just like that, you will begin to lose body fat.

Why we hate recording what we eat

We avoid recording our food because we’re self-sabotaging wimps. We can’t handle the truth. We’re childish, lazy and prefer being in denial. This is also why some people don’t track their checking account balance. They can’t handle knowing where they stand. They’re scared to deal with reality.
