From the Fringe: Restaurant Table Bacteria

Ezekiel Diet Note:  I’d like to start a trend. First let me tell you about a not-so scientific investigation into restaurant table cleaning I’ve conducted personally via observation for decades.

I’ve dined in hundreds, maybe thousands of restaurants in my life and I watch the staff or busboy in charge of cleaning the tables after a customer left.

Here’s an interesting fact, none of the hundreds of restaurants where I’ve observed the staff cleaning tables ever cleaned the edge of the table.

Here’s another interesting fact, very lightly run your palm and fingers across what appears to be a clean table and you’ll feel all the food still on that table in a spot here and there. But, do the same light touch finger slide over the edge of the table and it will feel like a scab.

The trend I would like to start is just talk about this. Bring this to your server’s attention and totally gross them out. Maybe they will tell the manager who addresses the problem. Or bring it up in a review.

I really believe restaurant tables need to be emptied and sprayed with alcohol and water, let it sit for a minute, and then scraped with a hard plastic edge regularly. Until you can do a light handed slide across the table without feeling old food.

Maybe this is why better restaurants use tablecloths. To create a barrier between you and that nasty table.
