Nostalgia: Why the Chrysler 225 Slant Six Outlived America’s Muscle Car Era

Ezekiel Diet Note: I ran across this YouTube video and watched it because I was around and remember when this Chrysler 225 slant six engine was the standard for reliability in the 1970s and 1980s. Second to this engine would be the old Ford 289 V8 in Mustangs and old Galaxy 500s.

The 225 slant six engine came in some ugly cars you could overlook because they were so reliable. They were standard in police cars and taxi cabs that ran forever.

I was not aware the Chrysler 225 slant six went on to power school buses, fork lifts, boats, generators, and farm equipment for decades because of its reliability.

I post this in case you ever run up on one of these engines someone needs to get rid of cheap. You can repurpose it for a generator or indestructible truck.

Quote from video: “Minimum cylinder wear after 300,000 miles.” Mechanics claimed “oil and coolant were optional”. Perfect car for a girl. All they had to remember is it has to have gas and air in the tires.

I would buy one if I found a deal as an investment that can only get more valuable.

The Chrysler 225 slant six and the Ford 289 V8 engine just lasted too long and had to be replaced. I can imagine the Chrysler Board Meeting agenda, “gentleman, we’ve determined that the 225 slant six engine lasts too long. At the current pace we’ll run out of customers in approximately 10 years. We have to retire the 225 slant six engine from production automobiles immediately.” The birth of designed obsolescence.
