Retiring a Cell Phone Number I’ve Had Too Long

Ezekiel Diet Note:  I just retired, or the correct term is “parked”, my cell phone number I’ve had for 25 years.

I’ve come to realize my cell phone number was like a second Social Security number for identification. Not only in numerous transactions everyday that required 2 factor authentication but also in highway scanning devices.

Highway scanners pick up cell phone IMEI and MAC addresses that refer back to the cell number for identification purposes. Drive by one and everyone in the car with a cell phone is instantly identified.

Brax.me has a new unlisted cell phone number service for $75 a year that will keep the goons watching guessing. Who was that masked man?

I discovered I can park that old cell number at Voiply for $20 a year. Voicemail comes to a designated email transcribed into text. And text messages also come to that designated email address as well.

I was concerned if all my daily two factor authentication texts would be forwarded fast enough.  Would they be forwarded fast enough to work within the normal 15 minute time limit to authenticate?  After a day of using the Voiply parked number I’ve discovered the authentication texts come via email in just seconds. It’s almost instant.

Also, after 25 years anyone could search the Internet and my cell phone number came up on dozens of sites. This was an issue when I was trying to get competitive quotes from different trades.

So I still own the number and can receive call voicemail and texts via email.  The number is just in retirement in case anyone from 25 years contacts it.
