‘Hell’ Is Four Different Words — And Only One Is Fire

The word “hell” appears all over English Bibles, but it isn’t one word. It’s four — Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, Tartarus — and only one is fire.

When Jesus warns about “hell,” he’s often standing beside a real burning valley outside Jerusalem called Ge-Hinnom. The King James translators poured one Hebrew word and three Greek words — Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, and Tartarus — into a single four-letter English syllable. Four distinct places, four meanings, collapsed into one. Pull them back apart and the grave, the realm of the dead, and final judgment start saying something the English never let you hear.
