Bonefish Grill small 1/12th slice of Key Lime Pie $11.90 or $142.80 per pie

I was recently at a Bonefish Grill and considered ordering dessert. However, I saw a server carrying a very small slice of Key Lime pie, maybe 1/12th of the pie, I immediately considered inflation must be cutting back on the size of $7 pie slices.

Until I saw the dessert menu. That 1/12th slice of Key Lime pie was now $11.90. Multiple that times 12 and they’re making $142.80 from a whole pie. That pie still costs $12 at any grocery store, maybe $20 at a bakery. Probably $5 or $6 if made in the restaurant.

Even at $7 a slice, 12 slices is $84, still pricey for what you get.

That’s not inflation, that’s gouging I thought.  I skipped the dessert. I could go to the Publix grocery store next door and get the whole pie for $12. When people start thinking this way from prices that are escalating faster than needed, their end is near.

I predict many more restaurants will be going under this year.

The Wow Factor

I witnessed something decades ago in a small family owned breakfast/lunch restaurant that I never forgot. By the way, this place was always packed with customers, and it probably still is.

It was their pancake plate. Two pancakes that were so big they hung off the plate and were huge fluffy-thick. You had to cut these pancakes up to get them back on the plate. It was really 4 pancakes.

But it was the oohs and awes from everyone in the restaurant as these pancake plates were coming out of the kitchen that got my attention. Everyone was pointing at and commenting on these gigantic pancake plates. I considered that was an excellent marketing concept that only cost that restaurant owner a few more cents in pancake batter. The return on that extra 10 cents, or even a quarter was huge.

It occurred to me that this Bonefish Grill pie gouge was this concept in reverse. A restaurant owner intentionally killing the business.
