“Born Again” Doesn’t Mean What You Think | The Greek Word Jesus Actually Used

What if the phrase ‘born again’ is only telling you half of what Jesus actually said? The Greek word Jesus used that night with Nicodemus carries two meanings at once, and English quietly dropped one of them. Once you see the half that got left out, everything about that conversation opens up in a completely different way.

John 3 is one of the most quoted chapters in the Bible, but most people encounter it through a translation that had to choose one meaning and leave the other on the floor. The word is anothen, and it means both ‘again’ and ‘from above’ simultaneously. Nicodemus, one of the sharpest religious minds in all of Jerusalem, heard the first meaning and hit a wall. Jesus was pointing toward the second one the entire time.
